Der amerikanische Schauspieler Gary Cooper wurde als Frank James Cooper am 7. Mai 1901 in Helena, Montana
als Sohne eines Richters geboren.
Seine Eltern setzten großen Wert auf eine gute Erziehung und schickten ihn auf ein Internat in England.
Ursprünglich wollte der künstlerisch begabte Cooper Msaler werden.
Seine Karriere begann als Stuntman und Komparse als Reiter beim Stummfilm. Dort wurde er schließlich
aufgrund seines guten Aussehens entdeckt und für erste kleinere Filmrollen engagiert.
1926 trat er erstmals als Nebendarsteller im Stummfilm "The winning of Barbara Worth" auf.
Wenig später erhielt er einen Vertrag von Paramount.
1941 erhielt er für "Sergeant York" seinen ersten Oscar als bester männlicher Hauptdarsteller.
Ein zweiter folgte 1952 für "Zwölf Uhr mittags" an der Seite von Grace Kelly.
Er starb am 13. Mai 1961 in Beverly Hills, Kalifornien an Lungenkrebs.
